About work at home pay

Whereas when we all congregate in that terrible place called office, we are all -- unsurprisingly -- paid the same way, the same time.  We practically line up like cattle.

When you work at home there are more options when it comes to pay.

Because you work at home you will be less supervised. Your boss is not standing there in your home (Thank God), so he or she has no way of knowing how much actual time you are spending on your work at home job.

For this reason, most work at home jobs are paid based on productivity. There are many people who work at home on salary, but it is quite rare to find a work at home job that pays by the hour. Exceptions to this would include work at home jobs that involve a 'clock in' process, such as jobs like telemarketing or something that requires you to work with a company website that would track when you were logged in and working.

Most actual contract jobs pay for specific projects. If you have a work at home contract job you will agree with the employer about the type of project, the duration of the project and the rate and manner of pay.

Editing or proofreading jobs may pay by the line or by the page, or by the project if it is a work at home contract job. Sales or telemarketing jobs may pay based on a commission amount per sale and/or a bonus and/or by the lead. If you work at home as an opinion surveyor, for example, you may be paid for each finished survey that you turn in.

People who work at home are more likely to be paid a salary if their work at home job is being converted to a work at home job from an office job by the employer. Since they are already familiar with you, your work, your workload and performance, your employer is the most likely to be willing to pay you a salary to work at home.

Remember that when you take a work at home job, you may be accepting employment with someone you will never meet. Your boss is taking a lot on faith. Without knowing you it would be irresponsible for any company to pay a blind salary to someone who is completely unsupervised because they work at home.

Virtually all employers will still pay you with a company check if you work at home. Pay days will vary, as will terms, including whether or not you are eligible for company benefits if you work at home. If you are an independent contractor, the chances are very high that you will not qualify for company benefits of any kind if you work at home.

Those of us whose work at home jobs are classified as independent contractor opportunities are usually responsible for paying our own taxes. Our employer(s) will usually issue us a 1099 at the end of the year showing us, and the IRS, how much income we earned as a result of our work at home jobs during the past tax year.
